School in Uganda

Currently, Uganda faces major challenges in providing education for children due to issues with funding, inadequate facilities and constantly increasing numbers of refugees escaping violence in the neighboring countries. While the average refugee spends 10 years living in a refugee camp 900 000 children grow up in those camps. They need and deserve both proper education and kid-friendly spaces. Therefore the scheme of the school that was inspired by traditional settlements focuses on making school education in Uganda more accessible by utilizing local materials and embracing vernacular architecture. This also allows to create a building that aims to fit within the African context and encourages community interactions and participation in the construction process.
